The Descendents of John and Mary Smith

 

from Castleblayney, Co.Monaghan, Ireland

My interests are all children of John and Mary Smith from Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan, Ireland

and they moved to Manchester around 1825.

 

1.       Ebenezer Ralph Smith. Born Ireland

Became a partner in Capes and Smith, Estate Agents, Manchester. He was living in

Prestwich when he died on 31 May 1851 of blood poisoning at Lytham St Annes. He was

buried at All Saints, Chorlton on Medlock. He married twice:-

 

A] -?- Howard [believed to be connected to Fitzalan Howards.

Had a son, Henry].

B] Frances Dunn 3 April 1831 at Prestwich and had a son,

Ebenezer George Smith, Born 28 April 1839.

Frances remarried to Patrick Starkey on 24 December at

Braddon in the Isle of Man, and died 3 October 1860 and

is buried there. Her husband was some 20 years her junior.

2.       Catherine Smith. Born 19 January 1802 Woolwich. Nothing further known.

 

3.       William John Smith. Born 1 October 1804 Woolwich. Became a partner in Featherstone

Smith of Manchester and was buried at All Saints, Chorlton on Medlock. He had children:-

 

A] William John Smith. Baptised 8 February 1833 Manchester

Cathedral. He married Caroline Farmer 11 December 1861

at the Cathedral. Caroline committed suicide 19 September

1883 and he died 31 December 1916. He had 2 daughters:-

 

i] Aurora Blanche Smith, baptised 1 July 1866

-- St Michaels, Hulme and died 6 March 1883

-- and is buried at Weaste Cemetery.

 

ii] Gertrude Maria Smith, baptised 6 September 1874

-- at St Gabriel, Hulme and died 30 April 1918

-- and is buried at Weaste Cemetery.

 

B] Henry Smith. Baptised 5 August 1835 and buried 13 August

1835 All Saints, Chorlton on Medlock.

 

C] Frederic Henry Smith. Born 1836 and buried 26 May 1837

All Saints, Chorlton on Medlock.

 

D] Ellen Elizabeth Smith. Born 1839 and buried 4 April 1839

All Saints, Chorlton on Medlock.

 

E] Louisa Ann Smith. Baptised 25 July 1840 and buried 10 May

1845 Chorlton on Medlock.

 

4.       Hugh Latham Smith. Born 22 November 1806 Woolwich. Was a hatter c.1840 having

been a book keeper previously. Was in Cockermouth c.1837, Hollinwood 1838 and Hulme

by 1841. He became a partner in Capes and Smith c.1851, married Eliza Hudson on the

30 November 1856 at St Martins, Birmingham, 27 years after the birth of their first child!! By

1861 they have separated and Eliza and the children are living in Bristol. Hugh is reputed to

have gone to Africa, big game hunting, but maybe the game were of the two-legged variety?

He died alone in Manchester on 24 December 1884 and is buried in a paupers grave at the

Southern Cemetery. Eliza died in Bristol on 3 April 1878.

 

Their children were:-

 

A] Frederick Smith. Born 22 November 1829, not known where,

but baptised 5 February 1837 at Cockermouth. He was run

over by a cart and died 26 September 1841 and was buried

at All Saints, Chorlton on Medlock.

 

B] Louisa Smith. Born 12 July 1834 in Manchester. By 1861

she is living in Bristol and married Eber Arthurs on 31 May

1865 at St. Pauls Church in Bristol. I have details of later

generations of this family. Louisa died 23 April 1880 and is

buried at Arnos Vale Cemetery, Bristol, with her mother.

 

C] Henry Smith. Born 5 February 1837 in Cockermouth,

Cumberland (now Cumbria) and baptised there together with

his elder brother and sister on 23 August 1837. By 1861 he

is living with his mother in Bristol.

He married Elizabeth Turner Child on 20 August 1861 at

St. Pauls Bristol. He was a hatter and moved to Penzance

in Cornwall. He died 27 November 1911 and full details of

His descendents are available.

 

D] Alfred Smith. Born 24 July 1839 Hollinwood, Oldham. Moved

with his mother to Bristol in 1861 and married Arabella

Burgess 26 May 1868 at Clevedon, Somerset. He was a

wine merchant in Bristol from 1866 and died there

26 September 1919. Full details of this line are available.

 

E] Edward Dudley Smith. Born 26 February 1842 in Hulme,

Manchester and moved to Bristol circa 1861 and married

Selina Charlotte Parfitt 1 January 1870 at St Andrews, the

Parish Church of Clifton, Bristol. He died 15 February 1929

In Bristol an is buried at Canford Cemetery. He was a wine

merchant, in partnership with his brother from 1866. A full

descent is available. This is my direct line.

 

5.       Rachel Smith. Born 12 January 1809 Woolwich.

Nothing further known. The family bible records her name as Margaret.

 

6.       James Galloway Smith. Baptised 6 February 1811 at Manchester Cathedral.

He joined the Royal Artillery and later worked for the East India Company.

He married Louisa Ann Jones c.1832 and died 17 May 1883 at Wandsworth.

 

 

Other children of John and Mary Smith remained in Ireland as they were born after John-s

reduction to half-pay officer in 1815.

 

Robert Harrison Smith, born 11 July 1837 may have spent a year or so in Manchester circa 1861studying cotton.
